Thoughts Gone Wrong

Our Book of the Month for March 2012 is Thoughts Gone Wrong by local author Isabelle Soucy-Chartier. With the recent discovery of UC Berkeley scientists in the capture and reproduction of images seen and sounds heard via human brainwave patterns, Isabelle Soucy-Chartier’s creation seems much closer to reality than science fiction.

Thoughts Gone Wrong is a great sci-fi book about a team of scientists creating a machine that can record dreams. When people’s secrets start leaking to the outside world, the scientists that invented the machine must journey forth to figure out if it is foul-up or foul play.

Notre “Livre du mois” de mars 2012 est Thoughts Gone Wrong d’Isabelle Soucy-Chartier, une auteure de Québec. Avec les découvertes récentes des équipes de scientifiques de la University of California à Berkeley dans la captation et la reproduction d’images et de sons perçus  via les ondes cérébrales, la création d’Isabelle Soucy-Chartier semble plus près de la réalité que de la science-fiction.

Thoughts Gone Wrong est un livre génial qui raconte l’histoire d’une équipe de scientifiques qui inventent une machine pour enregistrer les rêves. Lorsque les secrets des gens s’échappent et sont exposés, les scientifiques ayant créés la machine doivent investiguer pour découvrir s’il s’agit d’une erreur ou d’une machination.

Book of the Month / Le livre du mois

We decided to start a new tradition here at La Maison Anglaise. We are introducing the Book of the Month. Every month of 2012 we will bring to your attention a special book, selected by staff members and Mr. Guy Dubois and we will be having a special promotion for that book. Books will be chosen for their popularity, their quality or their novelty aspects. This month’s book is Switched by Amanda Hocking.

After many rejections from traditional book publishers, Hocking decided to self-publish her 17 novels as e-books in April 2010. With more than 2 million copies of her books sold, this self-published author from Minnesota went from an unknown to a best-selling author. Amanda Hocking’s accomplishment forever revolutionized our perception of global publishing.

Amanda Hocking soon realized the importance and popularity of the printed word as well, and we encourage that. In 2011 she signed a contract with St-Martin’s Press to publish several of her novels in paper format. The paper version of Switched just hit the shelves. On top of that there is a discussion with the author about a film adaptation of the book so there may be a movie coming out in the coming years.

Switched is the first novel of the Trylle series, a paranormal romance trilogy whose main character Wendy Everly meets Finn Holmes, who informs her of her inherited royal status and true identity as a member of the Trylle, a tribe of changeling trolls. Torn, the second volume of the Trylle series is coming to bookstores on February 28 and the final chapter Ascend will be published April 24, 2012. Enjoy!

Nous avons décidé de commencer une nouvelle tradition à La Maison Anglaise. À chaque mois de l’année 2012 nous porterons à votre attention un ”Livre du mois”  sélectionné par le personnel et par monsieur Guy Dubois, qui fera l’objet d’une promotion. Les livres seront choisis pour leur popularité, leur qualité ou leur aspect inusité. Ce mois-ci nous vous présentons est Switched d’ Amanda Hocking.

Après de multiples refus de la part des maisons d’édition traditionnelles, Hocking décide en avril 2010 de publier elle-même ses 17 livres en format électronique. Après plus de 2 millions d’exemplaires vendus, cette auteure auto-publiée du Minnesota passe d’une auteure inconnue à une auteure de livres à succès et cet accomplissement change pour toujours la façon dont nous percevons la publication internationale de livres.

Cependant Amanda Hocking realise rapidement l’importance et la popularité du mot imprimé (nous approuvons!). En 2011, elle signe un contrat avec les presses St-Martin afin de publier plusieurs de ses livres en format papier. Ne manquez pas la version papier de Switched qui vient tout juste d’arriver en librairie. Comme un succès ne vient jamais seul, Amanda Hocking est en pourparlers pour une adaptation cinématographique de Switched. À surveiller prochainement.

Switched est le premier roman de la trilogie Trylle , une série de romance paranormale où le personnage principal, Wendy Everly, rencontre Finn Holmes qui lui dévoile sa vraie identité comme membre de la famille royale des Trylle, une tribu de trolls métamorphes. The first edition of the Festival brought the following authors to Quebec city: Lawrence Block, John Brady, Hilary Davidson, Anne Emery, John Farrow, Ian Hamilton,Tom Henighan, Craig McDonald, Denise Mina, Louise Penny, Andrew Pyper Ian Rankin, Simon Toyne and Daniel Woodrell. Inheritance

The wait is over! Inheritance, the 4^th and last volume of Christopher Paolini’s series, is here. About fifty copies sold like hot cakes within hours of its release. We still have lots of copies on hand and more on order at our special price of $19.99. Nevertheless, if I were you I’d avoid the Christmas rush and buy a copy right now.

Finie l’attente, voici  enfin le dernier tome (4)de la série de Christopher Paolini; Inheritance.  Une cinquantaine d’exemplaires se sont envolés en quelques heures à peine sans même que l’on ait annoncé notre prix spécial de 19,99 $. Nous avons encore plusieurs exemplaires en magasin et d’autres sont déjà en commande pour combler la grande demande d’avant Noël. Malgré tout, si j’étais vous, j’éviterais la cohue du temps des fêtes et je me le procurerais dès aujourd’hui.

Wimpy Kid

The 6^th installement of Jeff Kinney’s series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Cabin Fever, is now available. Just like Inheritance, fifty copies were reserved by die-hard fans. Kids from 8 to 12 years old can never get enough of the humorous adventures of that character. If you aren’t already a fan, it’s time to get yourself the first books of the series or to give them as Christmas gifts. The last book, Cabin Fever, is available at only $ 16.95.

Hunger Games

After having seen the trailer it will be hard to wait until March 23 to see the complete cinematographic version of that literary phenomenon. To see the trailer click here.

Until then, there is only one thing to do; reread Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy. Then again, if you are the patient type, you can wait until February to get your hands on The official Illustrated Movie Companion.

Those who were present at the QuébeCrime Festival, remember that Craig McDonald is the author who needs no presentation. 16TH Annual Community Christmas Hamper Campaign

Two years ago, my husband and I found ourselves in a tough situation for Christmas. We had, one or the other, been out of work for two years. Christmas was just around the corner and pantry, wallets and bank accounts were empty. Our families had helped us out all they could over the last year but resources were limited. My ego had been knocked down a few pegs and I decided to seek outside help. I signed up for a Christmas Hamper and help with groceries. It was tough to ask for help from strangers but, when worse comes to worse, you re-examine your priorities and your options carefully.

A week before Christmas, we received a Christmas Hamper filled with non-perishable food we had been dearly missing and a small turkey. I don’t mind saying it, I cried. I was happy to see how generous people are, happy to have been accepted without having to jump through hoops and, most of all, I was happy we could have special meals during the Holidays. Things have improved a lot since then and now, each year, I either volunteer to help deliver Christmas Hampers or I donate all the non-perishables I can spare. Since people were so good to me and mine, I want to pass on the favor.

So this Christmas, share your time or your food to help out those in need, they really do appreciate it. La Maison Anglaise et Internationale has a box at the front of the store to collect all non-perishable food and supplies you care to donate. The donations will be picked up on Wednesday, December 14 by the people from the Quebec City Community Christmas Hamper Campaign. Look at our sidebar for more information.
