After many rejections from traditional book publishers, Hocking decided to self-publish her 17 novels as e-books in April 2010. With more than 2 million copies of her books sold, this self-published author from Minnesota went from an unknown to a best-selling author. Amanda Hocking’s accomplishment forever revolutionized our perception of global publishing.

Amanda Hocking soon realized the importance and popularity of the printed word as well, and we encourage that. In 2011 she signed a contract with St-Martin’s Press to publish several of her novels in paper format. The paper version of Switched just hit the shelves. On top of that there is a discussion with the author about a film adaptation of the book so there may be a movie coming out in the coming years.

Switched is the first novel of the Trylle series, a paranormal romance trilogy whose main character Wendy Everly meets Finn Holmes, who informs her of her inherited royal status and true identity as a member of the Trylle, a tribe of changeling trolls. Torn, the second volume of the Trylle series is coming to bookstores on February 28 and the final chapter Ascend will be published April 24, 2012. Enjoy!

Nous avons décidé de commencer une nouvelle tradition à La Maison Anglaise. À chaque mois de l’année 2012 nous porterons à votre attention un ”Livre du mois”  sélectionné par le personnel et par monsieur Guy Dubois, qui fera l’objet d’une promotion. Les livres seront choisis pour leur popularité, leur qualité ou leur aspect inusité. Ce mois-ci nous vous présentons est Switched d’ Amanda Hocking.

Après de multiples refus de la part des maisons d’édition traditionnelles, Hocking décide en avril 2010 de publier elle-même ses 17 livres en format électronique. A week before Christmas, we received a Christmas Hamper filled with non-perishable food we had been dearly missing and a small turkey. I don’t mind saying it, I cried. I was happy to see how generous people are, happy to have been accepted without having to jump through hoops and, most of all, I was happy we could have special meals during the Holidays. Things have improved a lot since then and now, each year, I either volunteer to help deliver Christmas Hampers or I donate all the non-perishables I can spare. Since people were so good to me and mine, I want to pass on the favor.

So this Christmas, share your time or your food to help out those in need, they really do appreciate it. La Maison Anglaise et Internationale has a box at the front of the store to collect all non-perishable food and supplies you care to donate. The donations will be picked up on Wednesday, December 14 by the people from the Quebec City Community Christmas Hamper Campaign. Look at our sidebar for more information.

Nowadays, Halloween is a major holiday for big and small and everyone readies their costumes and decorations way in advance. For my part, I will still be a bit last minute, due to the preparations for the QuebeCrime Festival (28-29-30 October) thatwill keep me busy enough to hardly notice that Halloween is around the corner. However, this year things will be a bit different for me as I will have the immense pleasure of Trick-or-treating with my 3 year old daughter Gabrielle. Frightened of everything as she is, she will be overwhelmed by the dragons, ghosts and other monsters that will roam the streets. The search for candies will most likely be of short duration. That is why, out of professional habit, I elected to choose a few Halloween books to read by the fireplace… if the doorbell doesn’t ring too often.

I thereby offer you a selection of books whose main theme is Halloween, so you too can enjoy such beautiful moments and celebrate this holiday. There is something for all age groups so, open your goodies bag, wrap yourself in a blanket, pick up a book and enjoy!

Depuis quelques années déjà, l’Halloween n’est plus une organisation de dernière minute.  Dans ma jeunesse, c’était différent.  Les citrouilles ne poussaient que la journée même de l’halloween et constituaient la seule décoration pour souligner l’événement.  Le reste était une affaire de costume et très souvent une question de débrouillardise, car nous avions oublié que cette fête arrivait.  Un couvercle et 4 trous dans la citrouille, on allume une bougie et débute le maquillage rapide. Ensuite, on endosse son costume (trop souvent improvisé)et,  la boite d’Unicef au cou, on arpentaient les rues à la recherche DU bonbon.  La friandise par excellence, le summum du sucre déterminait quelle était la meilleure maison à visiter.  Les plus rusés changeaient de costumes avec le grand frère et retournait au paradis en tentant de ne pas se faire reconnaitre.

Maintenant, Halloween est une grande fête pour petits et grands et tous préparent leurs costumes et leurs décorations bien en avance. Pour moi, je serais encore un peu dernière minute étant donné la préparation du Festival QuebeCrime (28-29 et 30 octobre)qui me tiendra assez occupé pour ne pas trop y porter attention. Cependant,cette année sera un peu différente puisque j’aurai l’immense plaisir de « passer » l’halloween avec Gabrielle, ma puce de 3 ans.  Elle qui a peur de tout sera dans tout ses états à affronter les dragons, fantômes et autres monstres qui se baladeront des les rues.  La quête de la friandise risque d’être assez courte et c’est pourquoi, par défaut professionnel, j’ai cru bon choisir quelques livres de circonstance que nous lirons près du feu…. Si ca ne sonne pas trop souvent à la porte.

Je vous offre donc une sélection de livres ayant pour thème l’Halloween si cela vous tente de profiter de ces beaux moments.  Il y en a pour tout les âges. Alors, ouvrez votre sac de gâteries, enrobez-vous d’une bonne couverture, ramassez un livre et amusez-vous bien!

Fall Fest was a blast this year! The kids from St-Patrick’s were overflowing with pride in their school and joy and cheer for all. As usual the people at the stands were all happy to be there and gave a warm welcome to all the visitors. The Music and dances were lively and lovelyand the weather! My God was it beautiful! The VEQ staff really outdid themselves to make this a fun event for the whole family. Great Job!

We had our own little kiosque there where we gave away free books and mystery rebates for the store. Needless to say, plenty of people left quite happy and a few came by our store that same day! We also gave out three door prizes. Without further ado, here are the Winners:

Mrs Lindsay Jarjour  won a beautiful set of book ends in an art deco style.
